What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization vs SEO vs GEO

AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the practice of making your business the source that AI assistants and search engines use when they answer a question directly, instead of showing a list of links. The “answer engines” are tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. AEO, GEO (generative engine optimization) and “AI SEO” are three names for largely the same work, and Google’s own position is that, for Google Search, it is simply SEO done well. This guide explains what AEO means, how it differs from traditional SEO, what actually moves the needle, and which popular AEO tactics you can skip.

TL;DR

AEO means optimizing to be named or cited inside an AI-generated answer, not just ranked in a list of links.

AEO, GEO and AI SEO describe the same goal. The labels differ more than the work does.

Google says optimizing for its AI features “is still SEO” and that llms.txt, special schema and “chunking” aren’t needed.

What works across engines: crawlable pages, original first-hand answers, accurate and consistent business facts, and an earned reputation.

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with a written answer rather than a ranked page of results. Featured snippets and voice assistants were the first answer engines. Today the term mostly refers to generative AI: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Microsoft Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode.

The goal of AEO is to be one of the sources those answers rely on, and, for a business, one of the names they recommend. When a buyer asks “Which accounting firms in Denver specialize in construction companies?”, the answer names two or three firms. AEO is the work of being one of them.

AEO vs SEO vs GEO: what’s the difference?

TermWhat it optimizes forWhere the result appears
SEO (search engine optimization)Ranking pages in search resultsGoogle and Bing results pages, including the map pack
AEO (answer engine optimization)Being the source of a direct answerFeatured snippets, voice answers, AI assistants, AI Overviews
GEO (generative engine optimization)Being cited or recommended in AI-generated answersChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

In practice, AEO and GEO overlap almost completely. GEO is the newer term and comes from a 2023 academic paper on generative engines. AEO is the older marketing term that grew out of featured snippets and voice search. Agencies use whichever their clients search for. Our explainer on generative engine optimization covers the GEO side in more detail.

The more useful distinction is between Google’s AI features and independent AI assistants. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode pull pages from Google’s own index using its core ranking systems. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude run their own web search and retrieval, and also draw on what their models learned in training. A page can rank well in Google and still be ignored by an assistant, or the other way round.

What Google says about AEO

Google addressed AEO and GEO directly in its guide to optimizing for generative AI features: “optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” It advises site owners to check third-party AEO and GEO advice against its documentation, and it names several popular tactics as unnecessary for Google Search:

  • llms.txt and AI text files. Google doesn’t use them. See our explainer on what llms.txt is and who reads it.
  • Special schema markup for AI. “There’s no special schema.org markup you need to add.”
  • Chunking pages into tiny sections. Not required, and there’s no ideal page length.
  • Rewriting for AI. “You don’t need to write in a specific way just for generative AI search.”
  • Chasing mentions. “Seeking inauthentic ‘mentions’ across the web isn’t as helpful as it might seem.”
  • A page for every question variation. Google treats this as scaled content abuse.

Google is one engine, so this doesn’t settle everything. But it is the only major AI search provider that has published detailed guidance, and it is a useful filter: be skeptical of any AEO plan built mainly on those tactics.

What actually works for answer engine optimization

Be crawlable and indexable everywhere

An engine can only use pages it can reach. Check that robots.txt, your firewall or your CDN aren’t blocking Googlebot or the AI crawlers you want, such as OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), PerplexityBot and Claude’s crawlers. Keep important content in HTML text, and don’t block snippets with nosnippet, which Google says also limits use in AI Overviews.

Answer real questions with first-hand expertise

Google says non-commodity content, meaning original insight and first-hand experience, likely matters more over time than anything else. The same logic applies to every engine: if your page says exactly what ten other pages say, there is no reason to cite yours. Write the answers only you can give: real process details, real pricing ranges, real examples and the mistakes you see clients make.

Make your business facts consistent

AI assistants describe a business by combining what many sources say about it: your website, Google Business Profile, directories, review sites and news. When your name, services, location and specialties agree everywhere, you are easy to describe and safe to recommend. When they conflict, assistants hedge or leave you out.

Earn a real reputation

Reviews, industry association listings, press coverage and expert quotes are what make an assistant confident naming you. The operative word is earned. Bought mentions and link schemes are exactly what Google’s spam systems are built to ignore.

Keep structured data accurate

Organization, LocalBusiness, Service and Person markup won’t force your way into an AI answer, but accurate schema that matches the page removes ambiguity about who you are and still earns rich results in Google.

How to measure AEO

For Google, AI Overview and AI Mode clicks appear in Search Console’s Performance report under the Web search type. For the independent assistants there is no official console, so the practical method is a fixed test: a set of 15 to 25 questions your buyers really ask, run monthly in each engine, recording whether you are named, how you are described, which sources are cited and who is named instead. Our guide to tracking AI visibility walks through it. Treat third-party “AI visibility scores” as samples, not truth. Google states that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. Google’s AI features sit on top of Google’s ranking systems, and the independent assistants lean on the same signals of quality and reputation that SEO has always rewarded. What has changed is the payoff. An AI answer names only a few businesses, so being “on page one” is no longer enough. You need to be among the few sources the answer trusts. That raises the bar on content quality and reputation; it doesn’t replace the fundamentals.

Where to start

  1. Ask the five questions your best clients asked before hiring you in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google. Note who is named.
  2. Fix anything that blocks crawling, indexing or snippets.
  3. Make your business details identical on your site, Google Business Profile and the directories in your field.
  4. Rewrite your most important service page so it answers those five questions better than anyone else.
  5. Re-run the same questions in a month.

FAQ

What is AEO in marketing?

AEO, answer engine optimization, is the practice of making your business the source AI assistants and search engines use when they answer a question directly. The goal is to be cited or recommended inside the answer from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO aims to rank pages in search results. AEO aims to be the source inside a direct answer. They rely on the same foundations, crawlable pages, useful content and trust, and Google says that optimizing for its AI features is still SEO.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

Mostly. GEO, generative engine optimization, focuses on AI-generated answers specifically, while AEO is an older umbrella term that also covers featured snippets and voice answers. In 2026 both labels describe essentially the same work.

Do I need llms.txt for AEO?

Not for Google, which says it doesn’t use llms.txt. Some other AI tools may read it, so it can be a small optional addition, but it isn’t a strategy.

How long does AEO take to work?

Fixes to crawling, snippets and inconsistent business details can show up as soon as engines recrawl, often within weeks. Becoming a regularly recommended source for competitive questions takes months, because it depends on content quality and reputation.
